Chapter Eighteen

True Love’s First Love

Cool water ran down his body. Jake stood beneath the showerhead and rinsed his hair as he considered everything that had happened since Lizzie had shown up at his door. His instantaneous attraction had been incomprehensible, and still was. She’d crawled under his skin, and there was nothing he could do about it.

He’d attempted throwing her out, sending her right back where she’d come from. That hadn’t gone well, so he’d tried ignoring her. When that hadn’t worked, he’d joined forces with her. And now, she was in his bed. The truth was there’d been no escaping each other—not as long as they remained in Montgomery Island. Once they left, it’d be a different story. They’d part ways, and it was anyone’s guess whether their paths would ever cross.

Jake shut off the faucet and wrapped a towel around his waist before he stepped out of the shower. He ran a hand over the fogged mirror and stared at his reflection. With the minimal progress he’d made on his own work, it wouldn’t surprise him if Antoine ended their partnership. And if what Hazel said about the Institute was true, then he needed to take advantage of the upcoming event to pitch his expedition here. He’d need no less than divine intervention to meet that new deadline, however.

The scraping of furniture being moved in the other room interrupted his thoughts. It was early morning, and Lizzie had been asleep when he’d left her side in bed—or had she? He frowned and tuned his hearing to the commotion on the other side of the door. He should’ve known better than to leave her unattended. Of course she’d try to outsmart him and use the opportunity to rummage through his things. Careful not to alert her he’d heard her movements, he opened the door an inch and spotted her.

With sheets wrapped around her naked body, she knelt in front of the nightstand where he’d hid the book. The secret compartment wasn’t easy to find, though if she paid close attention she’d figure it out in no time. He balled his hand into a fist and waited to see what she’d do next. Lizzie sifted through his things in the top drawer, then moved to the one in the middle, and finally to the third one. Jake bit back a smile at her perplexed expression, feeling confident she’d given up.

Ready to step out, he pulled the door open another inch and stopped in his tracks when Lizzie remained in the same place. She cocked her head one way then the other, as if studying every line and curve of the nightstand.

Lizzie slid her hands along the sides of the night table, then slipped one hand underneath it. “Aha!”

“I leave you alone for twenty minutes, and next thing I know you’re looking through my things. Yet again. Don’t you know there’s such a thing as privacy?” Jake closed the short distance in a few long strides, determined not to let Lizzie have the book.
